The Santa Fe Jazz & International Music Festival runs from July 15th through 31st, 2005. The Festival features 17 days of traditional and contemporary Jazz, World Music from Brazil, South Africa, Panama, Cuba and the US, and some real Rock and Blues guitar heroes.

July 15, 2005 - 8:30 p.m.
The Yellowjackets - For 20 years the Yellowjackets have been one of the most important and creative "rhythm and jazz" groups in existence. Featuring the combined talents of Bob Mintzer, Russell Ferrante, Jimmy Haslip, and Marcus Baylor, The Yellowjackets live are nothing short of astonishing! Come help us kick off Festival 2005 with this brilliant, high energy group!

July 16, 2005 - 7:30 p.m.
Kevin Mahogany - A real Festival favorite, Kevin's unmistakable voice has made him what Newsweek calls "The standout vocalist of his generation." Whitney Balliet declared in The New Yorker, "There is little Mahogany cannot do." He's right!

Danilo Perez Trio - A three-time Grammy nominee and member of Wayne Shorter's group, Danilo's playing led The New York Daily News to exclaim, "Perez weaves an astonishing, evocative web out of the many distinctive and colorful threads that make up Latin music." One of the premier Latin and jazz pianists around, Danilo's trio is nothing short of astonishing!

July 17, 2005 - 8 p.m.
Tuck and Patti - With remarkable musicality and depth, Tuck and Patti provide the kind of warmth and beauty that that is uniquely their own. Recognized worldwide as one of the great duos performing today, they recently released their tenth CD, "A Gift of Love", the title of which pretty much sums up their live performance. "Not since Ella Fitzgerald met Joe Pass on stage has there been so felicitous a mating as Tuck & Patti." Leonard Feather

July 19, 2005 - 8 p.m.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo
The Grammy Award winning group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, has come to represent the traditional culture of South Africa. They are regarded as South Africa's cultural emissaries at home and around the world. This ten-piece choir is world-renowned for their instantly recognizable sound, and they were featured prominently on Paul Simon's Graceland album. This should be one of the most memorable Festival evenings ever!

July 20, 2005 - 7:30 p.m.
Paul McCandless/Art Lande - Multi-reed player McCandless (founding member of Oregon) and piano iconoclast Lande create one of the freshest sounds in jazz and World Music today. Paul's compositions and signature sounds on oboe, bass clarinet, soprano saxophone, and other instruments have help propel two legendary groups (Oregon and The Paul Winter Consort) to world prominence. Art Lande's supremely musical piano playing and compositions have made him a revered figure in modern jazz. For 20 years this formidable duo has blazed their own trail, creating a unique and beautiful sound.

One of the founders of the World Music movement, Paul Winter has captured a huge audience worldwide. As an award-winning saxophonist, bandleader, composer, and explorer of the world's musical traditions, Paul Winter has been motivated for the past thirty years by the vision of a musical-ecological community and has followed a steady course towards his unique 'Earth Music,' a vital celebration of the creatures and cultures of the whole earth. In live performance, the Consort's spectacular multicultural musicianship is sheer joy!

"From Cordoba to Damascus"

Simon Shaheen dazzles his listeners as he deftly leaps from traditional Arabic sounds to jazz and Western classical styles. His soaring technique, melodic ingenuity, and unparalleled grace have earned him international acclaim as a virtuoso on the oud and violin. He is one of the most significant Arab musicians, performers, and composers of his generation. His work incorporates and reflects a legacy of Arabic music, while it forges ahead to new frontiers, embracing many different styles in the process. In this special concert, he will be tracing the route of the development of the oud across continents and musical styles. This is an event not to be missed, with one of the true living masters of Arabic music.

Eliane Elias - The renowned Brazilian singer/pianist returns with a superb band featuring bassist Marc Johnson. One of the most powerful performers on the jazz and World Music scene, the San Francisco Examiner states "Elias is among the major jazz pianists of our times." Her sultry vocals and charismatic stage presence make for an overwhelmingly appealing evening. Don't miss the return of last year's hottest Festival performer!

July 23, 2005 - 7:30 p.m.
Oscar Castro-Neves - The brilliant guitarist, composer, and singer has long been regarded as one of the seminal figures in modern Brazilian music. Oscar's latest CD, Playful Heart, was chosen as one of the 10 best critic's choice albums of the year by JazzIz Magazine. Oscar's onstage warmth and deep musicianship are undeniable and a joy to witness. Oscar will be performing in a rare solo appearance.

Jane Bunnett & The Spirits of Havana - Twice nominated for a Grammy, the amazing soprano saxophonist and flutist leads a six-piece band of stellar Cuban musicians. Bunnett's music covers a huge amount of stylistic ground while remaining grounded in the Cuban and jazz traditions that she espouses so brilliantly. For those of you who enjoyed The Buena Vista Social Club, this promises to be an energetic and soulful evening!

Marc Copland - Pianist Marc Copland, recognized as an innovator with a unique grasp of harmony and color, is perhaps the foremost proponent of the lyrical school of jazz piano today. The most prolific pianist of the new millennium, Copland has 13 critically acclaimed releases to his credit since 2000 and another three releases scheduled for 2005. AllAboutJazz.com sums it up best - "A quiet giant of his instrument...the stuff of legend."

Kurt Elling - Critically acclaimed jazz vocalist and six-time Grammy Award nominee, Kurt Elling combines vocalese with the spoken word, improvised scatting, and an appreciation of the classic jazz songbook to re-energize the art of jazz singing for a new generation. He has released six albums of self-produced music for the famous Blue Note label. In the category of "Best Male Singer", Kurt has won the Down Beat and the JazzTimes critics polls three years running, the most recent Down Beat readers poll, two Jazz Journalists Awards, and the Prix Billie Holiday from the Academie du Jazz in Paris. He is also one of the most popular and requested Festival artists of the past five years!

Dori Caymmi - A guitarist, singer, and composer, and member of one of Brazil's most important musical families, Dori is one of the founding fathers of modern Brazilian music, a two-time Grammy nominee and composer of dozens of well-known Brazilian songs. We are honored that Dori has agreed to play one of his very rare solo concerts. This is a unique opportunity to experience an intimate evening with one of the heroes of Brazil!

Ron Miles - Having performed with Bill Frisell, Don Byron, and many others, Ron is one of the most innovative, lyrical trumpet players around and a stunning composer! His profound compositions and quiet power were the highlight of last year's Festival for many jazz aficionados. Robben Ford - A four-time Grammy-nominated blues-fusion guitarist and vocalist, Robben is a true guitar hero! Today, possessing a resume that includes stints with an impressively broad range of other musical personalities Miles Davis, George Harrison, Little Feat, Yellowjackets, Joni Mitchell and Tom Scott among many others - Ford has demonstrated that he is one of the finest and most well respected guitarists on the planet. He has effortlessly traversed genres without compromising his exquisite, blues-based playing and singing. If sophisticated blues is your thing, Robben is the one to hear!

Eric Johnson - No one plays like this renowned Texas rocker! Eric is hands-down one of the greatest rock guitar players alive. Gary Burton's Generations - Gary Burton is a Grammy Award winning performer with 20 years of top vibist honors from Down Beat Magazine. He has single-handedly defined the state of the art on his instrument and helped develop a major new thrust in jazz for the last four decades. As an educator, he has helped shape the careers of countless musicians under his tutelage. One of the most significant personalities in jazz, he appears at this year's Festival with a smoking new five-piece ensemble.

July 31, 2005 - 8 p.m.
Dave Holland Quintet - This extraordinary bassist has more honors and awards to his name than just about any other living jazz musician. His collaborations with other jazz icons read like a who's who of contemporary music. His incredible band features Chris Potter, Nate Smith, Robin Eubanks, and Steve Nelson. We are honored to welcome The Dave Holland Quintet back to Santa Fe in a fitting close for this Festival season!

Pablo Champion in Santa Fe - 17 May 2005

After many years we'll be leaving the 1412 Llano St. building (the old Santa Fe Guitar and Violin Works’ shop) and moving a couple of blocks North to even more "almost-luxurious" quarters, across from Salazar Elementary.
I'll post the new address once the deal is final.
Don't worry, I won't ask to borrow your truck.

GIG is UP - 8 April 2005

GiG, Santa Fe's new non-profit performance space is up and running!

They're at 1808 Second Street, Suite L (next to the Second St. Brewery.)

I'll be playing there again on Wednesday May 25th at 8pm- details in the Calendar.

GiG is a small, elegant state-of-the-art room presenting events 4-5 nights a week. Each week features evenings devoted to Jazz, Classical, World, Folk, Hispanic Music and Spoken Word performances.
GiG is dedicated to promoting the finest local, regional and national artists, assisting in artist development and developing the performance culture of Santa Fe. It is a smoke and alcohol- free environment and provides a relaxed and respectful venue for both artist and audience.
GiG is presented by the Open Arts Foundation, producers of The Santa Fe Jazz & International Music Festival, a 501(c)(3) non-profit.

Maurice Prada plays Albeniz - 1 March 2005

My student Maurice Prada is playing selections from the Spanish Suite by Albeniz this Thursday, March 3rd, at the National
Dance Institute, in Santa Fe NM. The performance is one of the highlights for the mentorship program at his school. He will probaly wear a very sharp suit, shades, and a WWII helmet.
